Marty Balin, founder of Jefferson Airplane

San Francisco was the epicenter of the hippie movement. Marty Balin owned a nightclub and formed the Jefferson Airplane with Paul Kantor. Grace Slick joined and brought an amazing song with her about Alice & Wonderland.

Marty Balin's Paintings & Screenprinting

Marty Balin Screenprinting

Marty Balin screenprinting at Thunderbird Editions, Ltd. in Clearwater, Florida on the Iris print shown below.

Jimmy Page by Marty Balin

Marty Balin's painting of Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page looked great printed on canvas on the Iris printer, but Marty wanted the fluorescent red added. Since we had screen printing at Thunderbird Editions we decided to turn his print into a multimedia work by adding a layer of screenprinted ink on top of the Iris print.

We laid a clear piece of mylar of on the Iris prints of his painting and Marty painted where he wanted the bright red ink to go. The clear film was used to expose the screen used in the serigraph. Marty actually "pulled" the squeegee to make the collaboration truly authentic. We did the entire edition and only had to discard a few for poor registration.
