twitterA Pioneer in Fine Art Digital Printmaking

Steve Carlisle founded Thunderbird Editions as a workshop for artists to experiment with all things digital.

Thunderbird Brick Building

Carlisle set-up shop in a old brick building in downtown Clearwater. He assembled digital workstations with Macs, Barco monitors, drum scanners, Sinar view cameras with digital scanning back inserts and two Iris printers.

Steve was following a dream Graham Nash pioneered using inkjet proofing equipment to produce limited edition prints on hand-made watercolour paper from England. Artists were skeptical at first, but the creative vibes at Thunderbird Editions was inviting.

studioPart of the magic was that above the studios and darkrooms below was Hotel California, as Baron Wolman dubbed it. Back in the day, it really was a hotel.

Urban legend among my friends in high school was that it was a brothel. On a dare teenagers would climb the stairs, ring the doorbell and run before they ever saw if the Madam came to the door!

But what was once a hotel for transients became a luxury loft apartment for the exclusive use of artists in residence.

Thunderbird Editions is a collaborative environment, where artists explore their ideas using digital tools. For over 17 years we have worked with some of the finest artists in the world.

THUNDERBIRD EDITIONS • A Digital Playground for Artists

Thunderbird Editions produces outstanding original fine art prints and reproductions of original art, using Epson Wide-Format (piezo) technology. We use the 44" Epson 9800, which uses UltraChrome K3 pigmented inks. These inks give improved color balance and neutrality, as well as print longevity possibly exceeding 200 years, according to Wilhem. Our work is found in museums and galleries, as well as private collections across America. Artists appreciate the quality and attention to detail that is the hallmark of a Thunderbird print. Our 63 inch Mimaki piezo printer uses pigmented inks and provides larger printing sizes to Thunderbird Editions' offerings. Three Epson 4000 are also used to make exquisite prints on paper in the 17" x 22" size.

We're committed to melding of art & technology.

aletierFew printing shops have the experience that we have. We have been satisfying top-name artists and art publishers since 1994. Our work can be seen in museums, like New York's Museum of Modern Art, galleries, Hard Rock Cafe and in collections of corporate and private art connoisseurs.

The first thing artists notice is the detail and vibrant colors of each Epson (piezo) print. The printmaking papers and canvas give the feeling of the original. Artists come to us as an alternative to lithography and serigraphy because with our process there is a much smaller monetary investment. The artist has the ability to make prints on demand as they sell.

Let the artists at Thunderbird Editions introduce you to Epson (piezo) printmaking.

At Thunderbird you get our 17 years of experience and expertise in printmaking to achieve the closest color representation available. Our work is found in museums and galleries across America. Few printmakers have been producing limited edition Iris, Epson & piezo prints as long as Thunderbird Editions. Artists collaborate with master printers to create deeply saturated colors on exquisite handmade papers with archival ink sets. Black and white prints and artist collaboration are our specialties.

We offer competitive pricing and unmatched customer service. The artist can choose from a series of proofs to approve the final print or for the more discriminating artist we offer the ability to come into our studio and work side by side with our master printers to achieve the look and feel you desire in your artwork.

At Thunderbird we encourage artists to create art, interacting with our Photoshop experts and master printers in our state of the art studio. The studio tools consist of dual-processor high end Macintosh workstations filled with RAM to reduce processing time. Our input devices consists of a 4x5 Sinar view camera with Dicomed digital scanning back, Linotype-Hell flatbed scanner, and a Optronics high end drum scanner. We have several Epson printers and a very large Mimaki 63 inch Piezo printer running pigmented inks. This gives the artist the tools for creating high-end art with the latest technology.
